Native Wildflowers for Landscaping

Some things to keep in mind!

Use only container grown or bare-root seedlings from a reputable nursery grower.

Do not use plants that are rare or endangered.

Plants from seed take awhile to mature to flowering.

Most important is soil moisture and sun/shade.

Many plants can be used in different areas eg. phlox can be grown in full sun or part shade (under tree or shrub).

Some may survive in the non-optimal areas but if in the right environment the plant will look better and have more blooms.

Some plants may not be aggressive in the wild but in the right environment, a plant can take over an area.

Do not bring plants from the wild.  They usually don't survive because of deep roots eg. balsamroot has a very deep taproot.

Some plants may be short-lived ie. living for a few years then dying.

Over collection and disappearing habitat have made some species rare or endangered.
